A little of this and that

My home is a lot quieter now with 3 of my 4 boys in school. A little too quiet! My youngest and I were able to do some shopping together - I was able to just take my time and browse without a list in my hand. We came home with a few fun things from Target. These marshmallow sticks ($1) were so adorable I couldn't pass them up (one of my boys lives to roast marshmallows.) And my third son will be celebrating his 10th birthday in a few weeks so there have been several discussions about his party over dinner already. With these invitations on hand I should be able to get them out soon. And the lamp (can you believe less than $20?) was too much too resist. My friend has a similar one in her daughter's room with pink shades and I just loved it. I love the retro look and my boys thought it was very cool. They even mentioned how nice it would be to have some bean bags underneath it for reading.


The best part of all is I am looking forward to going to a bible study tonight, "Woman of Character", with a friend of mine. It sort of feels like I'm heading back to school, too. It should be a lot of fun!

Homework Already?

My son and I were busy today making this shirt for his Native American unit. His teacher wants him to wear this while they study Indiana's Native Americans. We started with a plain white t-shirt and then soaked it overnight with tea bags to turn it brown. After rinsing the shirt and drying it we did some snipping. The real work began as we threaded wooden beads onto the strips and this is the result! What do you think?

My oldest son had the assignment of reading the novel, "The Grapes of Wrath" over the summer. Can you believe he will have a test over it on the first day? Like anyone else, he put it off until last week. He finished it but was very disappointed with the ending (or lack thereof!) I remember reading this in school but fortunately I didn't have to read it over my summer break!

Tomorrow begins another school year for my boys. So instead of beach towels, flip flops and "Garfield" books in our entryway it will be backpacks, tennis shoes and assignment books. Change is definitely in the air!

Happy to be in the A/C

I have been happily sewing these last few days being thankful for our air conditioning. It has been beastly hot outside with high humidity. My family and friends who live in Missouri and Minnesota are saying the same thing about their weather. We are all looking forward to some cooler temperatures next week.

My special ruler came in the mail so I have been able to cut up my strips for the quilt I am working on. The blocks came together fairly easily. Now, I am arranging the blocks before sewing them together.


What was left over for strips will be used for the second and third quilt.


I also had fun working on this security blanket yesterday. It has "silky" ears for comforting babies/toddlers. Two of my sons would rub their blankies under their nose as they sucked their thumbs. They had a favorite corner, too!

Back to School?

I had to face the cold reality of my boys starting school next week (gasp!) I had been putting it off as long as possible; desperately clinging to the last days of summer vacation. But, yesterday began registration and our back to school shopping. It seems there is no turning back now! I will miss our lazy mornings and our days of freedom. I will miss afternoons at the pool, trips to the library, and the various places and friends we visited. Although, I won't miss them fighting and the endless messes in the kitchen! Maybe it is time for daily structure along with some learning. A fresh start to a school year can be the beginning of wonderful things, too!

Back to Quilting!

I am starting on a new adventure by getting back into quilting. I am really excited about it!! But, let me tell you how it began. About a month ago, I prayed for a friend that shared my sewing interest. Well, just a few weeks later I met this sweet lady who came to our house for a BBQ. After getting to know each other, she was curious about a quilt I made. So I pulled it out of a box for her to see it.


It is just a little sampler of SunBonnet Sue. I loved doing the applique but it was a challenge for me to pick out coordinating fabrics. My friends interest in the quilt was all the initiation I needed to start dreaming about quilts again. The best part is we are sharing this adventure together. We went to Rossville Quilts to pick out some fabric. This was our first time there and we fell in love with the store right off. The great part is we can order from them online. As is always the case with me it was easy to see what my next (second or third) project will be!!!


I went with this pretty pink "Lily and Will" collection by moda. The colors are more subdued than I usually go for but after opening it up I've found the colors really soothing and elegant. I spent a few hours sewing the strips together and it was helpful to unravel the tangled thoughts in my head. And not having to cut before sewing was such a luxury.
